Harmonizing Design: A Day of Sound Exploration and Spatial Insight at Wymering Manor
We all had to reach the Wyreming Manor early on that day. Since most of my classmates left early for the site, one of my classmates and I boarded the train 10 minutes and left for the site. On this day also different activities were conducted for sound frequencies.
First half (Morning- first floor)
Activity 1: Firstly, we were asked to feel the heartbeat through pulse of the opposite person by feeling with one hand and simultaneously sketch the heartbeat pattern on the sheet.
Activity 2: The main objective was to convert the heartbeat pattern in form of alphabets, how will it be projected? Here we were asked to write down the heartbeat patterns in the form of alphabets. I could feel the sound of ‘DUB’. Hence, I wrote DB on the sheet continuously.
Activity 3: For this activity, Prof. Sebastian mainly wanted to focus on the sound frequency of the materials. He gave us sphere balls of different materials like wood, marble and foam and dropped them on the floor to hear their sound patterns. Foam ball made the least noise. We were also asked to rub each of the sphere balls to the different surfaces on-site to understand their sound frequencies on it.
The main points I learnt here is as a designer it is not always about visual aesthetics in interior design to be considered but equally, sound aesthetics also to be considered while designing.
Second half (Afternoon time)
Activity 4: We were asked to go to ground floor. Each one of us were asked to sit individually in different spaces of the house and observe the space in detail and write down points on it. I chose dining are in the manor. The next step was to find the words that was written on the sheet from the magazine given to me and cut and paste them on the sheet.
Activity 5: Continuing on the same sheet we were asked to observe any furniture/ space/ object in the Manor and write a story about it.
Activity 6: The final activity of the day was to observe any furniture and write the rough dimensions of it by calculating visually. I chose a bookshelf in the Manor of dimensions: 5’x 6” x 5’ (W X D X H)

`you have described the exercises well. How do these drawings now inform your design process?
