Furniture Alchemy: Turning Dismantled Pieces into Wymering Soundscapes

Here in this task, we were asked to find an old furniture piece from any place and bring it to class workshop. We were asked to dismantle the old furniture into different pieces and create a completely new furniture or an accessory for the Manor. At first, it was difficult to find the old furniture. After a lot of searching, I could get an old side table from the British Heart Foundation.

To carry transport the furniture, I found difficulties as my classmate Teja also had his furniture to carry. We reached the workshop late in afternoon. I started dismantling the furniture by unscrewing different parts of the side table. The next part was we even had to choose three words and design the furniture piece accordingly and simultaneously discuss the idea with the faculty.

I chose the words to cut, to flow. I decided to design a floor lamp using techniques like joinery. I discussed my idea with faculty and they liked it. They gave a review that I have to design it in a different approach. So, my entire went it in finding furniture, dismantling and thinking of the new design.

The next day, I reached the workshop early and started working. My initial plan of doing floor lamp shifted to creating a maze design (which was inspired by Maze Runner) with sound frequency concept and lastly I stuck on the idea of Pin-ball board.

The initial concept to do a maze design was mainly inspired from the sound frequency class thought in the Manor. I got an idea what if use a marble ball and design the maze? If I use this, then the different sounds will not be heard in the maze. Then after thinking a lot, the idea of pin ball board came up. Pin ball board is composed of many obstacles in between for the ball to reach the end the point. The obstacles in between are made of different materials like MDF piece, wood and steel channels which are derived from the old furniture. Hence when the ball passes by different sounds are produced when the ball hits the obstacles.

One of the main reasons do the pin ball board was I wanted somehow to show the connection of sound with Wyreming Manor. The benefit of the class conducted on-site was another reason to create this accessory. I would like to conclude that as a designer, I would like to not only consider the visual aesthetics but also consider the sound aesthetics while designing any space. The overall experience- learning new topic, enjoyable, fun and interactive.

  1. Pin balls, ping pong balls, marbles all seem to make a good game. How are you now going to translate this into a scheme for Wymering? Think about ball games for the site. American soliders played table tennis on the site. Could you make it into a games site? Think of designing through sound. Look at the work of the Poor collective and we made that. https://poorcollective.com/. https://www.wemadethat.co.uk/

Can you publish an image of your artefact? Look at key texts that may inform your work or design practices that do.

  2. Could you explore the war period and how the house was used when it was requistioned by the army? What was happening in Portsmouth. Are there museums that might support your thinking/
